Gold Rush (Summer)
Deep in the frozen north, mercenaries clash for gold amidst ice and machinery.
Gold Rush is a classic Capture the Flag map set within the frozen depths of an Alaskan gold mine during the height of summer. It serves as one of the original seven maps released with Team Fortress 2, establishing the core loop of objective-based gameplay that defines the franchise. The environment features a stark contrast between the icy exterior and the warm, industrial interior of the mine, where two rival mercenary teams battle for control over valuable gold nuggets.

Lore & Background
The Gold Rush map is situated in a remote Alaskan mine owned by the Mann family's corporate interests. Despite the game's title suggesting a summer setting, the environment remains perpetually frigid outside, with snow and ice covering the surface while the interior is heated by industrial operations. This location became a flashpoint for conflict between Red and Blue mercenaries, who were contracted to secure the mine's output of precious gold nuggets. The intense rivalry often turns the mine into a chaotic battlefield where strategy must overcome the harsh terrain.
In Their Own Story
The air inside the mine is thick with dust and the smell of hot metal, a stark relief from the biting Alaskan wind outside. A Heavy leans against a conveyor belt, wiping sweat from his brow as he watches the narrow corridors leading to the enemy base. Suddenly, the distant rumble of an explosion echoes through the tunnels, followed by the frantic shouting of teammates. 'They're pushing!' someone yells. The Scout sprints past, clutching the golden flag tightly, while a Sniper takes aim from the high catwalks above. In this frozen hell, every second counts as the battle for the gold reaches its fever pitch.
Reader's Guide
Gold Rush features a symmetrical layout with two distinct bases connected by a central hallway and multiple flanking routes. The map is famous for its narrow chokepoints and verticality, allowing players to utilize high ground advantages or sneak through lower tunnels. Historically, this map was one of the first to showcase the Capture the Flag game mode in Team Fortress 2, setting the standard for future objective maps. Its design emphasizes teamwork and coordination, as defending the flag room requires precise positioning while attackers must navigate tight spaces under fire. The map remains iconic due to its balanced gameplay and memorable aesthetic. The contrast between the icy exterior and the warm, industrial interior creates a unique atmosphere that players have come to associate with classic TF2 experiences.
